Prof. Nurul Islam: Perspectives from Different Generations,

Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) organized a commemorative event on "Prof. Nurul Islam: Perspectives from Different Generations," to honor his legacy as a distinguished economist and a prominent role in Bangladesh's intellectual landscape. Professor Islam died on May 9 in Washington at 94. He was the first deputy chairman of the country’s planning commission in 1972 while Bongobondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was its chairman. After a month the commemoration event was held in BIDS conference room on 4 June 2023 at 2.00 pm. 

At the event, Mr. M. A. Mannan, MP, Hon'ble Minister of Planning, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest and Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Special Guest. 

Other distinguished discussants of the commemorative event were, Dr. Kamal Hossain an Eminent Lawyer and Politician of Bangladesh; Mr. Rashed Khan Menon, Honorable Member of Parliament, (Dhaka-08); Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chief Adviser, East West University, Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank; Professor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud Chairman, Economic Research Group (ERG), ; Former Professor of Economics, University of Dhaka; Dr. Quazi Shahabuddin,Former Director General, BIDS; Dr. Sajjad Zohir, Executive Director, Economic Research Group (ERG); Dr. Ahmad Ahsan, Director, Policy Research Institute (PRI), Former Lead Economist, World Bank; Mr. Matiur Rahman, Editor, The Daily Prothom Alo; Mr. Mahfuz Anam, Editor, The Daily Star; Dr. Roumeen Islam (Daughter of Prof. Nurul Islam), Senior Economic Advisor to the Managing Director, International Finance Corporation, World Bank and Abul Hasan Chowdhury, former State Minister of Foreign Affairs Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. 

Majority of the speakers feel sorry for the fact that Nurul Islam did not receive any honors from Bangladesh Government despite the fact that he made a significant contribution to the nation's independence and country’s economy as a whole.

Professor Dr. Nurul Islam's contributions to redefining Bangladesh's development and economic environment were also highlighted by speakers at the commemorative event.
